DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake University football team will host its seventh-annual Youth Day on Saturday, Aug. 17 inside Drake Stadium from 12:30-1:30 p.m.
The popular event, geared toward children in elementary school grades, is open to the public and there is no admission charge.
“Our guys will be in uniform to sign autographs, but more than that, we're going to put guys through some fun drills,” Drake head coach Chris Creighton said. “It's not so much about teaching football, but being with our guys and having a lot of fun. We really hope everyone comes out because our guys do such an awesome job and it'll be a really fun day.”
Youth Day is an event that was introduced by head coach Chris Creighton in his first season at Drake is to give area children an opportunity to visit with the Bulldogs' players while enjoying football-related fun and games.
Kids will have the opportunity to come down onto the field and experience the joy of participating in a safe, fun environment, while receiving football instruction. In previous years, Drake players have enjoyed the event as much as the kids, constantly interacting, laughing and encouraging those in attendance.
Youth Day is also a brief respite for the Bulldogs from fall practice to interact with area children. Following Youth Day, the squad will suit up for its first scrimmage of the season at 6 p.m.
The day's activities also go well beyond the football field with Drake cheerleaders on hand for pictures and to help lead and teach cheers.
