MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Matija Matic of the Drake men's tennis team rebounded to claim the Milwaukee Tennis Classic men's singles consolation title on Sunday, Sept. 18. Matic and teammate
Evan Fragistas were invited to compete in the prestigious Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Gold Level event.
Day One, Sept. 16
The duo of Matic and Fragistas were defeated by Ian Brady and Stefan Dragovic of Marquette in doubles (6-3) on Friday morning.
Matic lost to No. 1 seed Harris Walker of Harvard (6-4, 7-6) in his first match. Later in the day, Fragistas was bested by DePaul's Marino Jakic (6-4, 1-6, 1-0).
In the consolation round of 16, Matic dispatched Michal Lusovsky of UAB 7-6, 6-4. Marko Miladinovic from Baylor maneuvered by Fragistas 6-7 (2), 6-3, 10-3.
Day Two, Sept. 17
Matic beat two Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday to advance to the consolation final. In the quarterfinals, Matic was decisive in a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Sebastian Vile. Jared Pratt was Matic's next opponent in the semifinals before topping him 6-3, 3-6, 10-4.
Day Three, Sept. 18
Miladinovic was waiting for Matic in the consolation final. Once again, Matic showed resilience to win 3-6, 6-3, 10-2.
In addition to the singles consolation title, both Matic and Fragistas gained valuable experience against the nation's best collegiate tennis players.
