No. 19 Arizona, No. 8 Arkansas Prove to be Tough Tests Again on Day Two

Arizona and Arkansas displayed why they are both ranked in the Top 25 on the second day of the Razorback Invitational.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Drake University softball team went head-to-head again with two of the country's top teams at the Razorback Invitational at Bogle Park on Saturday, Feb. 25.

No. 19 Arizona 9, Drake 1
Arizona jumped ahead 6-0 in the top of first inning in large part due to a grand slam by Sophia Carroll. Emma Richards (0-1) was saddled with the loss after 1.0+ inning of work.

The Bulldogs got a run back in the bottom half of the first inning when Dighton scored MaKayla Rice on a groundout to third.

Paige Bedsworth took over in the circle going three innings and striking out two batters while allowing two runs on five hits. After adding a run in the top of the second, Devyn Netz hit a homer of her own for a 9-1 Wildcat lead. Allie Timmons pitched a scoreless fifth inning. The game ended after five innings.

Drake was limited to three hits, two of which came off of the bat of Rice.

No. 8 Arkansas 7, Drake 2
Jayme Scheck (1-1) got the start in the circle for Drake's fourth game of the tournament. Rylin Hedgecock promptly hit a three run homer for an early 3-0 Razorback advantage after the first inning. A timely two RBI single up the middle by Hannah Gammill extended the deficit to 5-0 in the bottom of the second.

Trailing 7-0 in the top of the sixth, Emma Dighton tripled home Sami Miller and Heidi Wheeler.

With the bats warmed up, the Bulldogs loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with a walk by Addie Lighter, a Carey Koenig single up the middle and a one-out single to left from Heidi Wheeler. Arkansas pitcher Robyn Herron danced out of danger with a strikeout and groundout to end the threat.

The Bulldogs will take on Arkansas one more time at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26 to conclude the Razorback Invitational.
