ST LOUIS – Redshirt junior
James Grunert (Muskego, Wis.) of the Drake University men's soccer team was selected the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin announced
Tuesdayafternoon. Grunert was honored for his performances during the period of Nov. 16-22.
Grunert, who
on Monday was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team, scored the game winning goal in the 74th minute for Drake as the Bulldogs won 2-1 over the Kentucky Wildcats in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship last week. It's the first NCAA win for Drake since 2009.
The goal was the third of the season for Grunert. Grunert holds a 3.74 GPA in health sciences and was a CoSIDA All-District selection earlier this year.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
