WICHITA KAN. ? In a dominating display of volleyball, No. 24 Wichita State captured its 16th straight victory to remain atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings with a 3-0 (30-14, 31-29, 30-15) decision over Drake on Friday evening (Nov. 9).
The Shockers attacked the ball at a .317 clip, while limiting the Bulldog attack to a .110 hitting percentage en route to improving to 23-4 overall, including 14-1 in the MVC. Conversely, Drake sees its ledger fall to 7-21 on the year and 4-12 in conference action with the loss.
Wichita State set the tone of the match in game one as it committed only error in 20 opportunities to register an eye-popping .613 attack number in a 30-14 triumph.
The second stanza proved to be much closer as the two sides struck the ball at a nearly identical pace (.211 ? WSU to .204 ? DU) before the Shockers withstood the Bulldog charge to escape with a 31-29 win.
Game three was all Wichita State, as the Shockers closed the tilt with a 30-15 decision.
Senior Samantha Nelson (Ceresco, Neb./Raymond Central) collected a team-high 11 kills for the Bulldogs, while sophomore Emily Madden (Van Meter, Iowa/Adel DeSoto Minburn) paced Drake with 10 digs.
Emily Stockman and Angela Jakubov directed Wichita State with 13 kills apiece.
The Shockers earned advantages in the match in kills (59-29), assists (53-29), service aces (8-1), digs (56-39), while Drake notched eight blocks to six by Wichita State.
