FORT WAYNE, IND ? The Drake men's soccer team completed its preseason slate battling to a 1-1, 90-minute, tie with IPFW Friday night.
“Tonight was very much a game of missed opportunities,” said Drake head coach Sean Holmes. “In the 90 minutes we played we had a great deal of possession and we actually created chances but we failed to capitalize and were never able to convert 1-0 into two or three-nil.”
The Bulldogs will now prepare for its season opening Drake Tournament, Aug. 30 and 31, when they host Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
Fifth-year senior Ryan Moylan (Wauwatosa, Wis.) scored the first goal of the match for the Bulldogs when he took a serve from sophomore Matt Kuhn (Raytown, Mo.) and beat IPFW goalkeeper Michael Knitter to the far post in the 55th minute (54:26).
“As always, Matt Kuhn rises to the occasion regardless of the position or task we ask of him,” commented Holmes.
IPFW evened the match in the 78th minute (77:47) when Raphael Martinez converted a penalty kick.
“In the end a dubious penalty evened things,” said Holmes. “With the absence of our reasonably competitive 10-man freshman class, this was an opportunity for several players to stake their claim in the playing rotation. Unfortunately that really didn't happen.”
Drake outshot the Mastadons, 13-6, including a 7-2 performance in the first half and limited IPFW to only two shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Drozd (Harwood Heights, Ill.) made one save in his first complete game for the Bulldogs.
“I thought our two center backs Edwards and Clark were fantastic competitors and along with Mike Drozd, who spent two years watching, they deserved a clean sheet,” said Holmes.
Sophomore forward Garrett Webb (Prairie Village, Kan.) led the Bulldogs with four shots, one of which was on goal, while Moylan recorded three shots, with two on goal.
