MADISON, Wis. – Drake men's soccer played to a 1-1 draw this evening in the 2022 non-conference finale. The Bulldogs netted a late goal to even the tally with the host Badgers of Wisconsin and move to 4-2-3 overall.
Both teams fought through a tightly contested first half. The halftime box score looked nearly identical as each team recorded seven shots and the Badgers made just one more save than Drake.
After the break, the Badgers finally put together some momentum. In the 68th minute, Jack Finnegan struck after an assist by Tim Bielic to take a 1-0 lead.
Trailing by a score, Drake then amped up their pressure. In the final stages of the contest, senior midfielder and London, England native
Louis Yuill scored his second goal of the year (87'). Yuill was assisted by fellow Englishman
Sam Thornton.
Neither team could find another score in the final three minutes of action as Drake earned their third draw of the year.
"It's always fun to play at a place like Wisconsin." Drake head men's soccer coach
Pat Flinn expressed after the match. "They had a great performance on Friday in their win over Michigan so we knew it would be difficult. My biggest disappointment was our passiveness in the first half. We weren't brave enough and Wisconsin was the better team. Our players were committed in the second half and deserved a road result. We have a great blend of young talent and experienced veterans; I want to see them play with belief all the time because we can go on a run if we do."
Drake will look to start their stretch run this weekend when they host MVC-newcomer Belmont on Saturday, Oct. 15 for Senior Day.
