DES MOINES, IOWA - The Drake men's and women's track and field teams registered a pair of second-place finishes in the 10,000-meter run to highlight the first day of action at the 33rd annual Jim Duncan Invitational Friday night at Drake Stadium.
Sophomore Meredith Bell (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) finished second in the women's 10,000-meter run in 38 minutes 8.16 seconds, as Truman State's Dani Dell'Orco came from behind down the homestretch to win in 38:06.78.
Drake sophomore Mike Bumgarner (Rosemount, Minn.) was second in the men's 10,000 in 32:21.25.
Drake sophomore Colin Coomer (Overland Park, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) and senior Zach Bales-Henry (Des Moines, Iowa/Lincoln) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 3,000 steeplechase. Coomer was timed in 9:56.74 followed by Bales-Henry in 10:01.94.
Danna Kelly of Truman State set a meet record in the women's
3,000-meter steeplechase of 10 minutes 49.66 seconds, bettering the previous mark of 10:57.54 by South Dakota State's mary Fouberg in 2007.
More than 1,800 athletes are expected to compete during Saturday's session which also features 37 high school events.
