Drake Crew Opens Fall Season at Head of the Des Moines

WHAT'S AHEAD
The Drake University rowing team and the Des Moines Rowing Club host the 28th annual Head of the Des Moines Regatta on Saturday, Sept. 24. Top collegiate rowing teams from across the Midwest, including Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas State and Wichita State will compete on the 2.87-mile course.

WHAT'S NEW
Typically, the Head of the Des Moines is held on the Des Moines River and rowed upstream from the Des Moines Botanical Center to Prospect Park. This year marks the first downstream race in the regatta's history. Races will begin above Prospect Park and finish at point between the University Ave. and Interstate-235 Bridges.

LAST YEAR
Last spring's season was marred by unfortunate weather and several cancelations. Bright spots from the season included the Varsity Eight team winning at the Sacred Heart Regatta, seven student-athletes earning all-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic accolades and head coach Charlie DiSilvestro earning Collegiate Coach of the Year honors from the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta.
