Drake Sweeps Braves with Comfortable 6-0 Victory

Hupke earns fifth pitching win in shutout fashion

PEORIA, Ill. – The Drake softball team extended their winning streak to four games as the Bulldogs completed a weekend sweep of Bradley (10-31, 2-12) on the road. Drake (11-22, 4-8) rode the right arm of Mackenzie Hupke to victory, her fifth of the season.

Emma Dighton continued her productive trip to Peoria with an RBI groundout in the first inning that drove in Haylee Lehman.

The Bulldogs added to their early lead in the second frame when Lehman walked with the bases juiced to drive in Skylar Rigby. Later in the second, Emily Valtman slapped a two-RBI single to bring Sami Miller and MaKayla Rice across safely and give Drake a 4-0 advantage.

After a scoreless third, Dighton reached first on an error at second base by Bradley while driving in Miller. Lehman chipped in again with another RBI in the fifth to plate Rice and reach the eventual final tally of 6-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Lehman and Valtman led the Bulldogs' offensive attack with two hits each while both players, along with Dighton, recorded two RBI apiece. MaKayla Rice's two runs led Drake on the basepaths while Skylar Rigby earned a pair of walks.

Mackenzie Hupke (5-4) jumped above the .500-mark with her fifth win of the year. She threw six full innings in the start, fanning four Braves and allowing five hits and three walks. Dighton came on in relief for the final frame and logged one K in a three-up, three-down seventh.

The Bulldogs will remain on the road for their next contest as they start an important week of action. Drake will visit rival UNI on Tuesday, Apr. 11 before hosting another in-state foe, Iowa, on Wednesday, Apr. 12.
