DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men's soccer program will forfeit Tuesday night's 2-1 win over Green Bay due to the participation of a student-athlete that was ineligible to compete in the contest per NCAA playing rules regarding accumulated red cards.
In addition to the forfeiture of the game, Drake head coach
Gareth Smith will serve a four-game suspension in accordance with NCAA playing rules while the student-athlete will serve an additional three-game suspension pending an appeal to the NCAA. Drake assistant coach
Kyle Smith will serve as acting head coach only during game competition.
"Following Tuesday's game, I was made aware that the student-athlete needed to serve a two-game suspension,"
Gareth Smith said. "As the head coach, I accept full responsibility and I extend my sincerest apology to our student-athletes and fans. The affected student-athlete had already sat out one game, which I believed satisfied the NCAA requirement for returning to competition. I have taken the necessary steps to address this situation and prevent it from occurring in the future."
