SAINT LOUIS – Reed Fischer (Minnetonka, Minn.), a junior on the Drake University men's track and field team, has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Student-Athlete of the Week.
Last week at the Mt. SAC Relays, Fischer ran the second-fastest 10,000 meters in school history to finish seventh overall in the Elite/Invitational section of the race. His time of 29:09.86 was the third fastest finish by a collegiate runner in the race and is easily the fastest in the MVC to date. That time currently ranks as the 12th fastest in the West Region and the 18th fastest in the nation.
Academically, Fischer owns a 3.76 grade point average as a junior English and public relations major. The Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is the second this year for Fischer and continues Drake's extensive collection of MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards. A Drake student-athlete has won the award 20 times in the 34 weeks the honor has been awarded in 2015-16 including three weeks in which the Bulldogs swept the men's and women's honors.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
