SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - Drake University senior Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the third time this season, the league announced Tuesday, Feb. 16.
Huston, a member of the women's track and field team, broke the 16-year-old school record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:17.30 at the Iowa State Classic. Her time bested the previous record, set in 2000, by more than 27 seconds.
She finished 10th overall in the event behind runners from programs such as Notre Dame, Stanford, Kansas and Iowa State. With that performance she now ranks in the top-five all-time at Drake in three indoor events, the 5,000 meters, 3,000 meters and mile.
Academically, she holds a 3.97 grade-point average as a biology and environmental science major and was the MVC Elite 18 Award winner during the cross country season.
Huston previously won MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors on Jan. 26 and Oct. 19.
Huston's most recent honor continues Drake's extensive collection of MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards. A Drake student-athlete has won the award 18 times in the 26 weeks the honor has been awarded in 2015-16 including three weeks in which the Bulldogs swept the men's and women's honors.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
