DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University cross country team has earned its traditional bounty of honors from the Missouri Valley Conference following last weekend's MVC Championship. The Bulldogs earned a total of four All-MVC honors, three Scholar-Athlete Team selections and an MVC Elite 18 Award winner.
Emma Houston (Des Moines, Iowa) collected a total of three MVC honors for her fourth-place showing at the MVC Championship to earn a spot on the All-MVC team.
The senior was also named the MVC Elite 18 Award winner for the second time in her career. The award is given at each of the MVC's 18 championship events to the participating student-athlete with the highest grade point average. Huston owns a 3.96 GPA as a biology major and was also named to the MVC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete team.
Huston's Elite 18 honor continues the Drake track & field and cross country program's tradition of earning the prestigious award. Bulldogs have claimed six of the last 14 Elite 18 Awards given in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field. Huston is the second two-time winner of the award during that span as senior Rob McCann (Mississauga, Ontario) has also earned two Elite 18 Awards.
Also earning a spot on the MVC Scholar-Athlete teams were Krista Maguire (Wausau, Wis.) and Reed Fischer (Minnetonka, Minn.). Both also earned All-MVC honors with Fischer finishing as the runner-up in the men's championship race while Maguire was 15th in the women's competition. Griffin Jaworski (Winter Park, Fla.) also earned all-conference honors for his 14th-place showing in the men's field.
The Bulldogs will have a weekend off from competition as they train for their next race, the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships Nov. 14 in Lawrence, Kan.
