Doree Ward, DD Recipient Interview

Doree Ward, a 2013 Double D recipient talks about her time at Drake and accomplishments after leaving Drake. A standout student-athlete in softball, track and field and a member of Drake’s first women’s basketball team, Doree Ward graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1977. In the fall of 1977, she became the first equipment room manager for the newly-built Bell Center at Drake. Starting in 1978, her teaching career has taken her to Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs; Floyd Valley High School in Alton, Iowa; back to Council Bluffs and then Newton High School in Newton, Iowa, in 1987, where she has taught for the last 25 years. Doree helped start the Newton High School girls volleyball program in the fall of 1987 as an assistant coach and then took on the head coaching job until 1992. She was the eighth grade basketball coach at Newton’s middle school from 1987-1997. In 1993, Doree was chosen as one of 40 delegates from the U.S. to go to Russia and Hungary through People to People International for driver and traffic safety education. In 1997 she received her master’s degree in education from Drake. She has been President of the Iowa Association of Safety Education twice (1994-95, 2001-02), and continues to be a member of the National Education Association and the Iowa State Education Association. The Double D award is given to former letter winners for their achievements and contributions to their profession and community after leaving Drake.

Gary Osborn, DD Recipient Interview

Interview with the Family of Gary Osborn, 2013 Double D Recipient. Gary Osborn received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Drake in December 1967 and began his coaching and teaching career at Drake the following month. He went on to receive his master’s degree from Drake in 1970. He was an assistant professor at Drake in the Graduate School of Education and served as the health, physical education and recreation department coordinator for the College of Education for four years. Osborn, who passed away in 2000 will be honored posthumously. Osborn served 32 years on the Drake University coaching staff. His service included a tenure as the head coach of the Drake women’s cross country program 1989 to 2000 and the head coaching duties of the women’s track and field program from 1993 to 2000. Under Osborn’s guidance, Drake won Missouri Valley Conference cross country titles in 1994, 1995 and 1998. He was named Gateway Conference Cross Country Coach of the year in 1989 and the Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1993, 1994 and 1995. Osborn’s achievements as a Bulldog coach included 18 athletes who earned all-Missouri Valley honors in cross country, 15 Missouri Valley individual outdoor track and field champions and 10 Missouri Valley individual indoor track and field champions. His emphasis on education resulted in the track student athletes receiving numerous academic achievement awards and maintaining one of the highest team grade point averages at Drake. Osborn was also instrumental in the operation of the Drake Relays, serving on the Drake Relays Committee for over 30 years. The Double D award is given to former letter winners for their achievements and contributions to their profession and community after leaving Drake.

Jerry Bachmann, DD Recipient Interview

Jerry Bachmann, 2013 Double D recipient talks about his time at Drake and his more recent endeavors. After an outstanding career in track and field, Jarrold Bachmann graduated from Drake in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree from the School of Journalism and began his career with the Des Moines Investment banking firm, RG Dickenson where he wrote their monthly “Investment Review” letter. In 1970, Jarry moved to Denver where he started a new chapter of his life as somewhat of a freelance speculator. Over the next 20 years, he has acquired and developed several organizations, ranging from the American Sportsman’s Club – which was the largest private hunting and fishing club in the country – to the Sunlight Coal Mine in Glenwood Springs, Colo., Malibu Oil and Gas, Mesa Contract Coal Mining, Glacier Pure Water, TangibleData, Time-Tel Communications, Continental Power Systems, Ocean Productions and Quest Airlines. In the 1990s he turned his attention to international business and started American Home, Inc., which was one of the first to produce coir (coconut fiber) doormats in India that were stenciled with colorful designs. In 1994 he bought the Camelot Banana Plantation in eastern South Africa. It was through the ownership of this property that led to his current venture, high-quality single-serve plastic beverage pouches for the U.S. market and the Pocket Shot was born. Today, his product is sold in Europe, Canada and 26 states and has become the icon of this specialty industry. In 2012, this innovation earned the silver award in the Environmental and Sustainability category at the Annual Flexible Packaging Association Achievement awards. The Double D award is given to former letter winners for their achievements and contributions to their profession and community after leaving Drake.

Michael Beaman, DD Recipient Interview

Michael Beaman, one of the 2013 Double D recipients, talks about his time at Drake and what he has done with his career since. Upon graduating from Drake, Michael Beaman taught physical education, junior high math and coached football, wrestling and track for 12 years. He then took a full-time position with the Iowa Army National Guard and retired as a Brigadier General after more than 34 years of service. His last assignment prior to retirement was the Assistant Division Commander, 34th Infantry Division, Minnesota National Guard. He served five years as the chief of staff for Iowa Emergency Management and Homeland Security and currently works for Northrop Grumman teaching leadership for battalion and brigade staffs as they prepare to deploy. Michael’s community service includes a serving as a contract trainer for the Institute of Character at Drake University and he has served as a board member on the Johnston Alliance for Character and a current member of Johnston Lions Club International. He is a lifetime member of the National Guard Officers Association. He has received numerous awards and decorations which include the Legion of Merit, the Minnesota Distinguished Service Medal, the Iowa Medal of Merit and countless other citations. He is a recipient of the National Infantry Association Order of St. Maurice, the National Artillery Association Order of St. Barbara and the recipient of the 2010 Iowa National Guard Officers Association Leadership Award. He is a member of the Drake University Wrestling Hall of Fame, a member of the National Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame and a member of the Pi Alpha Alpha National Scholastic Honorary Fraternity (MPA). The Double D award is given to former letter winners for their achievements and contributions to their profession and community after leaving Drake.
