IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Drake rowing team concluded a successful day of races at the 2013 Head of the Iowa Regatta on the Iowa River.
Larger scholarship programs, smaller non-scholarship programs and club programs all competed against the Bulldogs. Today marked the 18th time the Drake rowing program has competed in the Head of the Iowa Regatta. The University of Wisconsin and the University of Iowa, successful scholarship programs won many of today’s races, which took place in ideal conditions.
Today the Bulldogs were led its varsity A four boat as Jacque Nowers (cox.) (Ames, Iowa), Jessica Nightser (Council Bluffs, Iowa), Alex Lueck (West Allis, Wis.), Maggie Benhart (St. Charles, Ill.) and Katie Serbin (Hannibal, Mo.), which finished sixth with a time of 16:35.564. Its varsity four B boat placed 12th in the race at 17:25.195.
In the varsity eight race, Drake’s A and B boats finished back-to-back in eighth and ninth place, respectively. The A boat clocked a time of 15:41.266, while the B boat finished in 16:31.746.
“Everyone rowed really well today,” said Drake rowing head coach Charlie DiSilvestro. “When you race bigger 20-scholarship programs like Iowa, Minnesota or Wisconsin you measure yourself with their jayvee boats in addition to the other teams like Creighton, St. Thomas. I felt we held our own.”
“I’m proud of the adjustments we made in such a short turnaround from last week,” said DiSilvestro. “The fall season is about learning to race well and race hard. I was very happy with everyone’s effort today. That being said we still have some adjustments we need to make in the next two weeks before our next race.”
Drake competed today with heavy hearts as DiSilvestro received a phone call this morning that long-time program supporter, Lois Bright, passed away last night at the age of 102.
“Lois was a beloved part of our program for many years,” said DiSilvestro. “Everyone from rowers, coaches, alums and supporters will miss her dearly.”
The Bulldogs conclude the fall campaign with their annual duel against Creighton on the Des Moines River. This year’s showdown with the Bluejays is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9. The annual race between the two schools is in its 21st season.
