Six Drake Relays Record Holders Return For 103rd Edition
DES MOINES, Iowa – Six Drake Relays record holders, including fan-favorites Christian Cantwell and Chaunte’ Lowe, will compete in the 103rd running of the Drake Relays April 25-28.
Cantwell, who was inducted into the Drake Relays Hall of Fame back in 2010, set the men’s shot put Relays and Drake Stadium record in 2006 with a heave of 72 feet 6.25 inches. Cantwell, a silver medalist in the 2008 Olympics, has earned Most Outstanding Performer honors twice in his career.
Lowe soared 6 feet 5 inches at the 2010 Drake Relays to win her second title in as many years. Later that year, Lowe set the American and Drake Stadium records at the USA Outdoor Championships, jumping 6 feet 8.75 inches.
In the men’s invitational 110-meter hurdles, Ryan Wilson, a two-time Drake Relays champion, returns looking to repeat his 2009 magic. Wilson, despite running in lane eight, set a record of 13.21 seconds to win the event in 2009.
Four-time Drake Relays champion Justin Gaymon looks for his fifth title, this time in the men’s invitational 400-meter hurdles. Gaymon owns the men’s collegiate 400-meter hurdle record of 49.26
Former Dike-New Hartford prep standout and girls’ high jump record-holder Hannah Willms will compete in the women’s collegiate high jump for Iowa State. Willms recorded a jump of 6 feet 1 inch in 2010 en route to her third straight Drake Relays high school title.
Kevin Lewis returns to the blue oval as an Iowa Hawkeye after setting the boys’ 3200 record a year ago of 9:05.58.
Four other athletes holding Drake Stadium bests will partake in the 2012 Drake Relays. Kara Patterson, a two-time Drake Relays champion, is back after setting the American record in the women’s javelin with a throw of 218 feet 9 inches back in 2010 at the USA Outdoor Championships. Jenn Suhr, who set the Drake Stadium record in the women’s’ pole vault at the 2010 USA Outdoor Championships of 16 feet .5 inches, will participate in the Pole Vault in the Mall on Wednesday, April 25. Jenny Simpson, the stadium record holder in the women’s’ 3,000-meter steeplechase of 9:29.20, looks to defend her 2011 women’s’ invitational 1500-meter crown. Finally, Jake Arnold will compete in the men’s decathlon after setting the Drake Stadium record of 8,215 points at the 2010 USA Outdoor Championships.
