DES MOINES, Iowa--Des Moines will play host to more than 7,000 track and field athletes as they gather to compete in America's Athletic Classic. The event gets underway today with competition in the decathlon and heptathlon taking place, as well as the Pole Vault in the Mall at Jordan Creek Town Center.
The decathlon and heptathlon continue on Thursday, while a number of other track and field events begin competition.
Colleges and universities from all over the United States will take part in the 102nd running of the Drake Relays. There will be 128 men's university-college teams with 1,381 athletes competing. On the women's side, 128 teams with 1,295 athletes will compete.
In the high school boys division, 608 athletes have entered the Drake Relays from 137 schools. In the high school girls division, 134 teams are sending 607 athletes. There will also be 438 grade school and middle school athletes representing 60 teams from the greater Des Moines area.
There also will be 172 unattached athletes competing, 110 men and 62 women.
The road race event will also draw an estimated 2,500 runners to the Drake Relays.
Overall, the Drake Relays will have an estimated 7,001 athletes competing during the three-day meet.
