DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake University volleyball team dropped a tough match to the Missouri State Bears, 3-0 on Saturday night at the Knapp Center.
The Bears won by scores of 25-16, 25-23 and 25-15 to improve to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play; while the loss drops the Bulldogs to 0-11 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Amanda Platte (Mount Vernon, Iowa) led the Bulldogs in kills for the second straight match as she finished with nine kills Saturday night. Jadranka Tramosljanin (Ruma, Serbia) narrowly missed a double-double as she ended the night with eight kills and nine digs to go along with one service ace. Setters Rebecca Brown (Bentonville, Ark.) and Halli Meyer (Bettendorf, Iowa) each finished with 14 assists for the Bulldogs.
Drake held a 15-14 lead in set one after a kill by Cassie Effken (Lincoln, Neb.) forced a Bears timeout. Platte, Tramosljanin and Bentley Mancini (Burnsville, Minn.) each had two kills at that point of the set. MSU cruised to the win out of the break with an 11-1 run the last point on a service by Carly Thomas.
The Bulldogs narrowly missed taking set two as they held a 23-21 after a kill by Platte. The Bears took the second set with a 4-0 run that included three kills by Andrea Beaty.
MSU took control of set three with a 7-1 early lead and the Bulldogs couldn't recover as the Bears took the set and the match behind 14 kills and just three attack errors for a .257 hitting percentage.
Drake will travel to Omaha this Friday night for a match against the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks. The Bulldogs will close the trip against MVC rival the Creighton Bluejays Saturday night. The Blue and White will host their next home match Friday, October 5 against the Bradley Braves.
