Volleyball Signs Six
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University volleyball team added six high school standouts to its 2012-13 roster this week. The team signed Kaitlyn Allen (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), Rebecca Brown (Bentonville, Ark./Bentonville), Shelby Daum (Battle Creek, Neb./Battle Creek), Katelyn Dulek (Lenexa, Kan./St. James Academy), Cassandra Effken (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) and Scarlett Howerter (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) to National Letters of Intent.
6-3 • Middle Blocker
Allen, a three-year starter at Lincoln-Way East, was the team leader this past season in service points, solo and assist blocks and kill percentage. She will be a business major when she comes to Drake next fall.
5-10 • Setter
Bentonville High School
Brown, a four-year starter for Bentonville High School, led the Tigers to back-to-back Arkansas Class 7A State Championships. She earned three-straight all-state honors in addition to “Top Setter” and Arkansas Big Six Player of the Year accolades as a junior.
6-1 • Middle Blocker/Outside Hitter
Battle Creek High School
Battle Creek, Neb.
Daum, a three-year letter winner at Battle Creek High School, had 697 kills and 222 blocks during her tenure with the Bravettes. During her junior year, she made the Norfolk Daily News third team and was honorable mention on the Omaha World Herald All-State squad. Daum plans to earn a business degree while at Drake.

St. James Academy
Dulek, a three-year starter for St. James Academy, helped lead the Thunder to a 174-7 overall record and four-straight Kansas Class 4A State Championships during her four years. Dulek finished her high school career as St. James Academy’s all-time leading blocker.
6-2 • Middle Blocker
Pius X High School
Effken, along with teammate Scarlett Howerter, helped lead Pius X High School to the Class B state championship this year. Effken also made the 2011 Omaha World Herald All Tournament team after leading the Thunderbolts to the Nebraska state title. She leaves Pius X with an array of school records, including the single-game kill record (33), single-season kill record (458), single-season block record (90) and the Pius X career block record (168). She also maintained a 4.0 grade point average and is a 2011 University of Nebraska-Lincoln Distinguished Scholar. Effken will study pharmacy at Drake.
5-11 • Libero
Pius X High School
Howerter, who played numerous positions during her high school career, comes to Drake as a libero. She played her senior season at Pius X High School with fellow Drake recruit Cassie Effken and made the 2011 Omaha World Herald Class B All-Tournament team. Howerter earned Nebraska Class A second-team All-State and First Team All-City honors in 2010 while playing for Lincoln Southeast High School.
