DES MOINES, Iowa – Sophomore middle blocker Cassie Effken (Lincoln, Neb.) has elected to forgo her final two seasons with the Drake University volleyball program due to medical issues.

Effken had an outstanding freshman campaign, earning 2012 Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman honors. She started every match and led the team in block solos (27), block assists (80), blocks per set (1.04), total blocks (107), attack percentage (.224) and points (304.0) and finished third in kills (229). Her blocks per set average ranked ninth in the league. She was the first Bulldog since Emily Heffernen in 2009 to be named to the MVC All-Freshman team.

Effken appeared in 10 matches this past season and smashed a career-high 17 kills against DePaul on Sept. 6. In the final match of her career against league-power Wichita State, she tallied 10 kills and three blocks.

Effken, an excellent student in the classroom with a 3.68 cumulative grade point average in pre-pharmacy, was awarded the MVC Commissioners Academic Excellence Award last year as a freshman. She will remain a student at Drake to finish her degree.
