Former Iowa Western head volleyball coach Darrin McBroom was named the head volleyball coach at Drake University on Monday, March 25, 2013.

McBroom spent four seasons as head coach of the Reivers, compiling an outstanding 177-25 overall record and guiding the team to four-straight National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament appearances. Iowa Western earned a fourth-place finish at the 2012 national championship, its best finish since 2008.

“Darrin McBroom's experience and his demonstrated commitment to the holistic development of student-athletes exemplify the qualities integral to The Bulldog Way culture of excellence and ethics,” said Drake associate athletic director Megan Franklin. “His passion for teaching the sport and celebrating the team's successes on and off the court make him the perfect fit to lead the next era of Drake volleyball.  We are thrilled to welcome Coach McBroom to the Bulldog family!”

“I’m very excited to come to Drake University,” McBroom said. “I was so impressed with all the people at Drake that I met during the process and I appreciate the opportunity given to me by the Drake administration and the confidence they’ve put in me. I’m looking forward to getting started.”

The Reivers won four consecutive NJCAA Regional Championships under McBroom and this past season he was named the Mid-West Region Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Iowa Western finished the 2012 season ranked third nationally and was ranked as high as number one during the 2012 season. McBroom earned his 300th coaching win this past season.

McBroom owns one of the highest winning percentages amongst coaches in the NJCAA at 85 percent with an overall record of 322-58 in eight seasons. He has coached 12 NJCAA All-Americans and had three student-athletes named NJCAA Academic All-Americans.
