CEDAR FALLS, Iowa  - Less than 24 hours after winning his third consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field title in the men’s 5,000 meters, Drake senior Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) added a 3,000-meter title to his already sterling resume on the second day of the MVC Championship at the UNI-Dome.

For his efforts, Austin was named the meet’s co-Most Valuable Athlete as the event’s top scorer with 20 points along with UNI’s Brandon Carnes. Drake also collected another individual MVC honor as Steven Jordan (McFarland, Wis.) was named the men’s Elite 18 winner. The award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing at the finals site at each of the MVC’s 18 team championships. In addition to collecting the honor, Jordan also finished third in the 200 meters on Saturday with a time of 21.88.

Those efforts helped Drake’s men’s team finish seventh with 64 points while the women’s squad with ninth with nine points. Indiana State claimed both the men’s and women’s team titles.

While Austin took the top spot in the 3,000 meters, teammate Rob McCann (Mississauga, Ontario) was right behind him in second place with a personal best time of 8:17.40. The sophomore also barely missed scoring in the mile with a ninth-place showing in 4:19.93.

“Brogan and Rob ran great races,” said Drake head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown. “They went right to the front of the pack and then kicked in the last lap to take over the competition.”

In the shorter races, the men’s team also got career best performances in two events to rack up points. Drake’s top sprint finish on the oval came via Brett Wright’s (Ankeny, Iowa) second-place finish in the 400 meters with his fastest time of the season in 48.54, nearly a full second improvement over his preliminary heat time. In the 60 meters Kai Asberry (Carrollton, Texas) matched his career-best of 6.95 to finish fifth in the finals and James Saxton (LaCrosse, Wis.) moved up three spots from his preliminary heat finish to come in fourth in the 800-meter final with a personal best time of 1:53.74.

Off the track on Sunday, the men’s team collected points in the high jump with Ryan Cook (Colorado Springs, Colo.) clearing 6-9 to finish seventh and Johnathan Osifuye (Woodbury, Minn.) hitting a career-long jump of 47-1 to finish fifth in the triple jump as a freshman.

“I was pleased with the men and their efforts across the board,” Kaiser-Brown said. “They fought for every point this weekend.”

The women’s team encountered some struggles in putting points on the board with top-8 finishes in three events on the weekend. On Sunday, Kayla Bell (Bollingbrook, Ill.) finished sixth in the triple jump with a career-best leap of 38-7.75.

On the track, the women’s squad also picked up a point in the 4x400-meter relay as the team of Danyelle Cole (Kansas City, Kan.), Virginia Hill (Haymarket, Va.), Jessica Campbell (Boone, Iowa) and India Knight (Germantown, Md.) finished eighth in 3:53.90, a season-best time for the Bulldogs.

In other finals for the women on Sunday, Taylor Scholl (Prior Lake, Minn.) was 10th in the mile in 5:10.94 to improve one spot from her preliminary heat finish.

With no ‘Last Chance’ meets in NCAA Division I track and field this season, the Bulldogs will settle on the marks they have achieved to date this season for inclusion in the NCAA Championships on March 14-15 in Albuquerque, N.M. To qualify for the championships this season, a competitor must rank in the top-16 nationally.
