CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Drake University senior Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) added another honor to his already historic career at Drake by capturing the Missouri Valley Conference title in the 5,000 meters on Saturday evening.

Austin bested the field with his time of 14:13.67 to claim his third straight MVC championship in the event and his fourth overall MVC crown. The time also shattered the 16-year-old MVC Championship record by nearly four seconds.

“Brogan ran great for us today,” said Drake head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown. “He started out in the front of the pack and out-kicked Indiana State’s runner in the last lap to take the win.”

Conor Wells (Des Moines, Iowa) also scored in the event by coming in eighth in 14:51.87. Drake got on the scoreboard in the sprints as well with Steven Jordan (McFarland, Wis.) earning a podium spot by coming in third place with a personal best time of 21.88 in the 200 meters.

The men’s team, which sits in a tie for sixth place with 23 points, can add to its total tomorrow in final events with Kai Asberry (Carrollton, Texas) turning in a personal best of 6.95 in the 60 meters to advance to Sunday’s finals. Two Bulldogs, Brett Wright (Longmont, Colo.) and Ian Wells (Champaign, Ill.), also moved on in the 400 meters by running 49.32 and 49.22 to finish fifth and eighth, respectively in the preliminary heats.

James Saxton (LaCrosse, Wis.) finished seventh in the 800 meters with an indoor personal best of 1:54.21 to advance to the finals as did Rob McCann (Mississauga, Ontario) and Doug Brady (Englewood, Colo.) in the mile. McCann finished sixth in 4:26.25 while Brady was 11th in 4:19.87.

“Rob and Doug delivered their best in the mile today,” Kaiser-Brown said. “We left some points out there but hope to have some solid performances tomorrow.”

The men’s distance medley relay team of Brady, Ryan Shull (Pella, Iowa) George Webb (Morton Grove, Ill.) and Guy Eckman (Iowa City, Iowa) tacked on points by finishing third in 10:01.91.

The women’s team scored in one event on the day with the distance medley relay team of Melissa Parks (Norfolk, Neb.), Virginia Hill (Haymarket, Va.), Sammy Nielsen (Maplewood, Minn.) and Krista Maguire (Wausau, Wis.) finishing third with a season best time of 12:02.51.

In the mile, Taylor Scholl (Prior Lake, Minn.) smashed her personal best by nearly 10 seconds to finish 11th in the preliminary heats with a time of 4:58.97 to advance to the finals.

Despite not advancing in the 60 meters, the Bulldogs’ women’s team got a pair of personal bests from Tiara Winston (Denton, Texas) and Danyelle Cole (Kansas City, Kan.) with times of 7.70 and 7.73, respectively.

The final day of the MVC Championship gets underway on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with the conclusion of the multi-events. Field events begin at 11:30 a.m. with the women’s triple jump and action on the track starts at 1:45 p.m. with the finals of the mile.
