DES MOINES, Iowa - Junior Nell Boyd’s (Arlington Heights, Ill.) three-set victory at No. 4 singles clinched a dramatic 4-3 win for the Drake women’s tennis team over Wisconsin (4-2) on Sunday (Feb. 23) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

The victory extended the Bulldogs’ winning streak to five, while also marking the first-ever triumph for Drake (5-1) against the Badgers. The win was the Bulldog’s initial decision versus a team from the Big Ten Conference since besting Minnesota, 4-3, on Feb. 2, 2002.

The Bulldogs registered a pair of come-from-behind victories in doubles to stake themselves to a 1-0 advantage entering singles play.

Boyd and sophomore Jordan Eggleston (LaQuinta, Calif.) gave Drake its initial win in doubles besting Sydney Rider and Anastasia Tripolskaya at No. 3, 8-5.

Garnering the deciding tally at No. 2 was the tandem of sophomore Maddie Johnson (Onalaska, Wis.) and senior Klavdija Rebol (Kranj, Slovenia), who edged Becca Bailey and Lauren Chypyha, 8-6.

The Badgers evened the affair at one in singles after Chypyha netted a 6-0, 6-0 triumph past Rebol on the No. 1 court.

Eggleston extended Drake’s margin to 2-1 dispatching Nova Patel at No. 5, 6-3, 6-4.

Sophomore Lea Kozulic (Varazdin, Croatia) moved the Bulldogs to within a point of victory netting a 7-6 (1), 6-2 win against Bailey at the No. 6 position.

Wisconsin rallied with a pair of come-from-behind three-set wins on court No. 2 and 3, respectively, to square the affair at three.

The outcome of the contest then came down to the No. 4 spot where Boyd was battling Rider.  After dropping the first set against Rider, 6-4, Boyd posted a 6-4 victory in the second to send the tilt into a winner-take-all third frame.

In the third set, Boyd raced to a 4-0 lead before Rider fought back to cut the deficit to 5-3. Boyd dug deep and persevered to capture the point and the match for the Bulldogs.

Drake returns to action on Friday (Feb. 28) traveling to Lincoln, Neb., for a 5:00 p.m. match at No. 53 Nebraska.
