Women's Tennis Volunteers With The Young Women's Resource Center
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake women’s tennis team led by first-year head coach Sadhaf Pervez recently volunteered with Hit the Ground Running, a group for girls ages 10-13 that focuses on resiliency and empowerment through exercise.
The 10-week program is run by The Young Women’s Resource Center (YWRC), a non-profit organization that supports, educates, and advocates for young women ages 10-21, and culminates with participants running a 5K together.
The program allows the girls to have an athletic focus and the Bulldogs were hands on with guiding them towards their goals.
The focus of Drake’s visit was helping the girls deal with “growing and learning through conflict” and on “learning about resiliency”.
“It was great to see that in the short time we spent around these young runners how much they looked up to our girls,” Pervez commented. “We wanted to give them first-hand knowledge about what it takes to be a student athlete at a university, especially one in their own community. This was a great opportunity for the kids and for our student-athletes to see the importance of giving back to the community.”
