Bulldogs Earn Two Titles To Round Out Gopher Invitational
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Sophomore Maddie Johnson (Onalaska, Wis.) captured a come-from-behind 0-6, 6-4, 10-8 triumph over Minnesota’s Maja Vujic to lead the efforts of the Drake women’s tennis team on the final day of the Gopher Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 22).
In consolation play in the bracket, Ante and Eggleston came up short of registering wins in the third- and fifth-place matches, respectively. Anastasia Tripolskaya of Wisconsin bested Ante, 6-3, 6-1, while Minnesota’s Kendall Heitzner rallied to edge Eggleston, 3-6, 6-2, 12-10.
Junior Nell Boyd (Arlington Heights, Ill.) won her ‘M’ flight consolation contest versus Sydney Rider of Wisconsin, 7-5, 7-5
In doubles, the tandem of Ante and Boyd claimed the ‘Maroon’ flight title with a default victory over Kylie Haviland/Jeke Stroobant of Northern Iowa.
In consolation play, the duo of Eggleston and Johnson bested Diana Davitaia and Maria Paula Ribero from Eastern Michigan, 8-2, to garner a fifth-place showing.
The Bulldogs travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for the Northern Iowa Fall Invitational next Friday (Sept. 27) through Sunday (Sept. 29).
