Bulldogs To Play For Two Titles At Gopher Invitational
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Two titles will be on the line for the Drake women’s tennis team when it takes the court on Sunday (Sept. 22) for the final day of the Gopher Invitational after the Bulldogs registered five victories in second-day competition on Saturday (Sept. 21).
Earning the opportunity to play for a championship in the ‘Gold’ singles draw was sophomore Maddie Johnson (Onalaska, Wis.), who bested Anastasia Tripolskaya of Wisconsin, 6-4, 6-3. Johnson will square off against Maja Vujic of Minnesota for the title.
In doubles, the Drake tandem of sophomore Mariel Ante and junior Nell Boyd (Arlington Heights, Ill.) reached the title tilt in the ‘Maroon Flight’ with a pair of victories. The duo opened its day downing Minnesota’s Kelsey Frechette and Aria Lambert, 8-5, before advancing to the championship match with an 8-2 decision past Jordan Kearney and Sydney Wolfe of Northern Iowa.
Ante and Boyd will battle Kylie Haviland and Jeke Stroobant from Northern Iowa for the title.
Drake wraps up action at the Gopher Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 22) beginning with doubles play at 9:00 a.m.
