Sowa Named To NFCA Midwest All-Region Third Team
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Freshman Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) of the Drake University softball team has been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Midwest All-Region Third Team, the association announced on Thursday, May 15.
Sowa was outstanding at the plate and in the outfield for Drake in her first season as she was named to the all-Missouri Valley Conference first team. The freshman hit a team-leading .382 behind a team-high 55 hits and also led the team in triples with two, on-base percentage at .469 and was second in steals with seven. Her batting average is the eighth best single-season mark in school history and the third best all-time for a Drake freshman.
Sowa started the final 48 games of the season and appeared in 51 games. She displayed solid defense in left field with just one error, 68 putouts and a stellar .986 fielding percentage. She was named MVC Newcomer of the Week on March 3 after hitting a blistering .545 (6-for-11) along with two runs scored and three runs batted in over four games to help Drake capture the Woo Pig Fastpitch Classic title with a 3-1 record.
The all-region teams honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s 10 regions with first, second and third teams selected for each region. The all-region teams are voted on by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2014 NFCA Division I All-American teams.
