Drake Falls To Iowa State, 6-4
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones beat the Drake University softball team, 6-4, in the final contest of the regular season for Drake. The Bulldogs move on to the Missouri Valley Conference tournament, which will start Thursday, May 8 in Normal, Ill with a game against Loyola at 1:35 p.m.
Drake (19-32) was led at the plate by freshman Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) who went 3-for-4 with three doubles and two runs batted in, while junior Hayley Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded two hits. Senior Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) and junior Laura Brewer (Waukee, Iowa) each drove in one run.
Senior Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) drew a leadoff walk in the third inning and promptly stole second on the first pitch to Sowa. Sowa launched her second double of the afternoon, this one just staying in the ballpark, as it caromed off the right field wall. Pierce had to wait to see if the Iowa State right fielder was going to catch the softball so she only was able to advance one base. However, the next batter Brewer drove her in with a sacrifice fly for the first run of the game as Drake led 1-0.
Iowa State (23-28-1) answered in the bottom half of the inning as Rachel Hartman drove in two runs with a one-out double over the head of Drake center fielder Sarah Ryan (Mount Vernon, Iowa). The next batter Aly Cappaert followed with a single to bring in another run as Iowa State extended its lead to 3-1. The Cyclones scored one more run as it closed the frame with a 4-1 lead.
The Cyclones added one run the bottom of the fourth inning and another run in the fifth inning off a leadoff home run to extend the lead to 6-3.
Gronewold had a sacrifice fly in the final inning to bring in Nybo for the Bulldogs last run.
The winner between the sixth-seeded Drake Bulldogs and the seventh-seeded Loyola Ramblers will advance to play the three seed, Southern Illinois, Thursday evening at 6:35 p.m.
