Drake Takes Season Series Against UNI With 7-1 Victory Wednesday Night
DES MOINES, Iowa – Freshman Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) launched a three-run home run and junior Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) added a two-run home run as the Drake University softball team knocked off in-state rival Northern Iowa, 7-1, on a cold, rainy Wednesday night at Ron Buel Field.
In the circle, Schmidt pitched 5.2 innings in relief and allowed just one run on four hits, while striking out seven as she improved her season record to 14-11. Sowa’s first career home run came in the fourth inning and it was a no-doubter that hit half way up the scoreboard in right field and put Drake (15-28, 7-11 Missouri Valley Conference) up 5-1. Schmidt launched her fourth home run of the season in the opening inning.
UNI (24-16, 11-9 MVC) got its only run in the third inning when Catlin Wnek smashed a solo home run to leadoff the frame. The two teams had just waited out a 45 minute rain delay as strong rain fell right as the top of the third inning was set to start. Wnek hit the first pitch from Schmidt after the delay.
The Bulldogs’ second run occurred in the second inning as senior Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) ripped an RBI single to plate fellow senior Cortney Wood (Alburnett, Iowa). Wood drew a leadoff walk and moved all the way to third base on Liz Buck’s (Overland Park, Kan.) deep double to right field.
Pierce drove in the last run for Drake in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. She finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and two runs batted in. Sowa was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Wood added a hit, a run scored and two walks. Senior Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) drew three walks and scored a run.
The Bulldogs claimed the season series over the Panthers with tonight’s win as the two teams split the first two games back on April 15. Drake travels to Indiana State for a three-game series that starts with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26. First pitch with the Sycamores is set for noon.
