BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State Jackrabbits won both games against the Drake Bulldogs Wednesday night. The Jacks won game one, 6-2 and came from behind to win, 4-3, in game two.
SDSU scored five-runs in the third inning off Drake sophomore Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa), four runs came on a grand slam by Marlee Peterson, to put game one away.
Gronewold allowed six runs on 11 hits with three walks and four strikeouts and falls to 15-19 on the season. Two freshman led Drake at the plate as Hayley Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn.) went 2-for-3 and Laura Brewer (Waukee, Iowa) went 2-for-2 with one run scored.
Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) started for Drake in the finale and the freshman pitched well early giving up just one unearned run in the fifth inning before running into trouble in the seventh.
Torey Craddock (Tucson, Ariz.) extended the Bulldogs lead to 3-1 in the top of the seventh with an RBI double to score Silliman. The senior infielder led Drake with two hits in game two.
Schmidt allowed a single to start the bottom of the seventh but bounced back with a strikeout to bring pinch-hitter Samantha Terry. Terry drew a walk and Vanessa Kellems followed with a single to load the bases. Next Schmidt walked leadoff hitter Devon Reick as the Jacks cut the lead to 3-2 with the bases loaded walk. Schmidt forced Emily Weber to pop up to Craddock and give Drake two outs and bring up first baseman Alex Landon, who gave the Jackrabbits the walk-off win with a two-RBI double.
