DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake senior women’s soccer player Generve Charles (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) has been chosen to train with the Haitian National Soccer Team in its preparations for the inaugural Caribbean Women’s Cup to be held in Trinidad and Tobago from Aug. 19-26, 2014.

Charles is currently training with Haiti in South Bend, Ind., for the eight-team tournament for the region’s championship that is also doubling as a qualifying competition for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be hosted by Canada next year.

Trinidad and Tobago will be joined by the five first-round group winners; Antigua & Barbuda, Bermuda, Jamaica, Haiti and Martinique, plus the top two first-round runners-up; Puerto Rico and St. Kitts & Nevis.

The winner and runner-up from both Group A and Group B will earn places at the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship, which will determine the Confederation’s World Cup representatives later this year in the United States.

“This is a great opportunity for Generve,” Drake head coach Lindsey Horner commented. “To be a part of the National Team and experience the level of play will be invaluable for her final season here at Drake. Generve worked really hard after having to sit out last season with an injury and was prepared to compete for a spot on the squad when she got the call.”

If Charles is selected to compete for Haiti at the Caribbean Women’s Cup, she will miss at least the Bulldogs’ first two regular season games. This though is an experience Horner believes will pay dividends for Charles and the Bulldogs.

“When Generve returns to our program, she will have a new perspective and standard for physicality, training demands, and speed of play. She had to leave her comfort zone here at Drake and learn a new system, style of play, and be the new player on an a team, much like our freshman will here in a few weeks. I would imagine this experience will help her to become a better leader for our team immediately and open doors for Generve after her playing career with our program is finished if she chooses to go that path.”
