Rowing Places Sixth At MAAC Championship
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Drake University rowing team placed sixth at the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships on Lake Mercer. Drake was led by its second varsity eight boat, which took second in its race behind Jacksonville, who won the MAAC title with 45 points.
The Bulldogs second varsity eight boat consisted of cox- Bri Varela (Olathe, Kan.), Stephanie Boylan (Greenleaf, Wis.), Mallory Bonstrom (Eau Claire, Wis.), Sarah Larson (Watertown, S.D.), Bailey Berg (Eau Claire, Wis.), Justine Choe (Morton Grove, Ill.), Bri Leinon (Sussex, Wis.), Kerstin Donat (Vilsbiburg, Germany) and Brittany Michael (Pleasant Hill, Iowa) as they clocked a time of 7:10.53, which was just behind the Dolphins’ time of 7:09.80.
“Our team competed hard today,” said head coach Charlie DiSilvestro. “Our 2nd varsity had an outstanding day with putting up our high point total of the day. They nearly won it over Jacksonville, the conference winners. They had a lead for a time, but couldn’t hold off a late charge from Jacksonville.”
The Drake varsity eight boat finished in fourth in its preliminary heat, while the varsity four boat was fourth in its preliminary race. Drake’s petite boat placed first in its exhibition contest, while Drake’s varsity four B boat was second and the Drake C boat was fourth, respectively, in their open four race. The Bulldogs tallied 21 points.
“It wasn’t the finish we hoped for today, but we still finished this season on a strong note,” commented DiSilvestro. “We learned a lot. I’m very proud of how they competed all year. Some years you don’t get the results you want, but that’s sports. I’m sorry for the seniors not getting to make the NCAA’s. Seven seniors have carried us for so long and were on that 2012 conference title team. They taught the rest of the team how to be a strong rower. We will come back next year hungry and ready to work to be even stronger.”
Drake will race one final time this spring when it takes a four team to the 2014 Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Penn on May 9-10.
Varsity 8 cox-Jacque Nowers (Ames, Iowa), Jessica Nightser (Council Bluffs, Iowa), Katie Serbin (Hannibal, Mo.), Alex Lueck (West Allis, Wis.), Tristina Meister (Mitchell, Neb.), Kelsey Leahy (Madison, Wis.)
