SPRING HILL, Mich. The Drake University rowing team posted strong times on the opening day of the 2014 Lubbers Cup on Spring Lake.

Drake, who returned to the Lubbers Cup after a year absence, competed against Illinois, Purdue and Grand Valley State on Saturday. Grand Valley is one of the top club programs in the country.

The Bulldogs had to wait out an hour weather delay this morning before they were able to get out on the water. Drake’s varsity 8+ boat and second varsity 8+ boats each competed this morning and then again in the evening. The program’s two novice boats raced in the afternoon session.

“We had some good racing today,” said head coach Charlie DiSilvestro. “Had a late start with the weather, but we really held our own today against some great competition in Purdue and Grand Valley. I like this regatta’s format because it allows us to make adjustments and tinker with the lineups. The eight boats are making progress and the fours were competitive.”

The two-day Lubbers Cup will end tomorrow morning for Drake as its varsity 8+ boats will return to action and its two varsity 4+ boats will get an opportunity to compete.

“I’m proud of the team’s performance today,” commented DiSilvestro. “Every time we raced we figured a new thing or two out, which is helping our progress. Tomorrow we will go against Eastern Michigan, another varsity program, so we are hoping for some more good results.”
