OMAHA, Neb. The Drake University rowing team’s three varsity 4+ boats each captured first place finishes at the Upper Midwest Collegiate Sprints on Carter Lake on Sunday.

The varsity A boat recorded a time of 7:21.98, nearly seven seconds in front of second place and host Creighton, while the varsity B boat tallied the fastest time of the day at 7:19.91 to beat two Creighton boats and an Iowa State boat. The varsity C boat came in at 7:32.13 edging two Bluejays’ boats.

In the squad’s other races, Drake’s varsity 8+ boats each placed second in their respective races, with the second varsity finishing just 3/10 of a second behind Creighton with a time of 6:37.6. The first varsity 8+ boat clocked a time of 6:43.10 behind Creighton (6:20.32) and in front of St. Thomas University (7:24.47).

“We had some really good races today, but the first varsity 8 didn’t have the result we are looking for,” said head coach Charlie DiSilvestro. “We have three weeks until conference and that gives us some time to figure some things out. It’s a priority boat that we have to find some more speed in. This week we will try some different lineups/personnel to set things up for Michigan next weekend.”

“I was happy with the second varsity 8 today,” commented DiSilvestro. “They got behind, but they showed great heart, gaining ground on every stroke. They kept fighting and ended up just 3/10 of a second behind Creighton. Just didn’t have enough lake left to surpass them.”

Drake will have one more road trip before it hosts is annual spring regatta, the Drake Invitational, on Saturday, April 19. The Bulldogs travel to the two-day Lubbers Cup in Spring Hill, Michigan on April 5-6.

The following week Drake will compete for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship, which will take place on Lake Mercer in Princeton, N.J. on Saturday, April 26. Drake looks to capture its second conference title in program history.
