Rowing Starts Fall Campaign At The Head Of The Des Moines Regatta
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake rowing team had a successful start to the 2013 fall season as they competed at the Head of the Des Moines Regatta on a cool, windy day on the Des Moines River.
“Today we focused on the singles, varsity fours and the novice eight,” said Drake head coach Charlie DiSilvestro. “We mixed up other boat lineups trying some different combinations to get experience and we won the single, finished second in the novice eight and placed third in the varsity four.”
The Bulldogs battled an hour weather delay after a mid-day storm blew through the Des Moines area during the singles races. The weather delay pushed the start of the varsity four races back almost an hour, but Drake overcame the delay to place its top boat third behind two strong University of Iowa boats.
“I’m happy with how today went,” said DiSilvestro. “We had a great crowd come out in some less than ideal conditions, which was great to see. Now we turn towards getting ready for the Kansas race next month in Lawrence (Kan.).”
Drake travels to the Jayhawk Jamboree on Sunday, Oct. 20, which is hosted by the University of Kansas before traveling to the Head of Iowa on Sunday, Oct. 27. The Bulldogs conclude their fall season against the Creighton Bluejays on Saturday, Nov. 9.
