Rowing Competes At Jayhawk Jamboree
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Drake rowing team competed at the Jayhawk Jamboree hosted by the University of Kansas on Sunday afternoon. The regatta was held in Burcham Park in Lawrence with racing action on the Kansas River.
The Bulldogs were led by 10th place finishes by its varsity A four boat and novice A four boat. The varsity four team of Bri Varela (cox.) (Olathe, Kan.), Jessica Nightser (Council Bluffs, Iowa), Alex Lueck (West Allis, Wis.), Maggie Benhart (St. Charles, Ill.) and Katie Serbin (Hannibal, Mo.) clocked in at 18:53.86 in its race. The novice four crew of Rachel Kiehne (cox.) (Columbia, Mo.), Gabrielle Brodek (Hampden, Maine), Sarah Larson (Watertown, S.D.), Rachel Fritz (Marshall, Wis.) and Mackenzie Allison (Duluth, Minn.) squad finished in 20:25.20 in its race.
“We competed today,” said Drake rowing head coach Charlie DiSilvestro. “We were up against some very talented teams in Kansas, Kansas State, Tulsa and Central Oklahoma, who went to the NCAA tournament last year. I think though we held our own against them. We had great weather today at a well- run regatta that provided a big-time atmosphere against some great programs.”
“We have work to do in practice, but more water time this week will help and with our lineups as well,” said DiSilvestro. “Our schedule doesn’t get an easier this week with a trip to Iowa City, but these two fall races help us in the long run and the girls will continue to work hard.”
Drake heads to the Head of the Iowa regatta hosted by the University of Iowa in Iowa City next Sunday, Oct. 27. Following the trip to Iowa City, the Bulldogs conclude the fall season with their annual duel against Creighton on the Des Moines River. This year’s showdown with the Bluejays is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9.
