DES MOINES, Iowa – Nearly four months after ground was initially broken on the Shivers Basketball Practice Facility, construction on the 40,000 square foot project reached a new milestone as vertical construction of the structure began this week.

Following months of site preparation, foundation and utilities construction, the first pieces of structural steel and prefabricated concrete are scheduled to be erected this week. Fans can follow each step of the construction online via a live webcam available by clicking here.

“This is another great step forward for this project and our program,” said Drake men’s basketball head coach Ray Giacoletti. “It’s exciting for our players, staff, recruits and those who have given so generously to this vision to now see our future home rise from the ground.”

Once completed the facility will include two full-size courts flanked by auxiliary baskets to make the most of every minute of allocated practice time. Off court, the structure will feature state-of-the-art locker rooms, team rooms and video suite. New atrium entrances and a 4,000 square foot hospitality suite will enhance the gameday experience for fans as well as provide the University with premium event space.

“It’s been incredible to see the progress over the last few months and the statement it makes about Drake’s commitment to our program and student-athletes,” said women’s basketball head coach Jennie Baranczyk. “Thanks to those that have shared our vision, we can all watch with heightened excitement as the structure takes shape and the symbolic leap forward it is for Drake athletics.”

To date, Drake has received extremely generous support from alumni and fans to raise more than $8 million towards the project. There is still time to be part of this historic project; all gifts of $1,000 or more will forever be honored inside the facility.
