Former Women's Basketball Standout Erin Richards Inducted Into Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Basketball Hall of Fame
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Basketball Hall of Fame inducted former Drake University women's basketball standout Erin Richards this past Saturday at the Iowa Girls State Basketball Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.
Richards, a four-year starter at Drake from 1998 to 2002, helped the Bulldogs reach three NCAA Tournaments, including Drake’s Sweet 16 appearance in 2002.
She was a three-time honorable mention All-Missouri Valley Conference selection as well as a MVC Scholar-Athlete first team honoree in 2002.
She is 20th all-time in Drake women’s basketball history in career points with 1,334 and is the school’s record holder in career free-throw (89.4 percent) and three-point field goal percentages (40.4 percent).
Prior to Drake, Richards played at Mason City High School from 1994 to 1998, where she earned first team all-state honors three times and led the state in free-throw percentage three years. She scored 1,826 career points along with pulling down 735 career rebounds. Her career free-throw percentage of 88 percent is the third-highest mark in Iowa history.
Richards was inducted this year with former UNI standout Jacque Kalin, who played at Sioux City North and Jennifer Jorgensen of Southeast Webster-Grand.
Richards is the ninth former Drake standout to be selected into the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Basketball Hall of Fame. She joins Kay Riek, Lorri Bauman, Jenni Fitzgerald, Jan Jensen, Kristi Kinne, Lisa Brinkmeyer, Tammi Blackstone and Linda Sayavongchanh.
