ST. LOUIS – Drake freshman Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs, Mo.) has been selected the Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball Newcomer of the Week for a league-leading seventh time this season, the league office announced today.

In Sunday’s thriller against UNI, Wendell finished with a career-high 35 points along with six rebounds, two assists and two steals and her three-pointer with two seconds left in regulation forced overtime.

Wendell’s career day against the Panthers helped her join exclusive MVC company. She now has 423 points in her first season and is just the 10th Valley freshman to score 400 or more points in their debut season. Two former Drake standouts are in that club as Tammi Blackstone tallied 400 points in 1996-97 and Carla Bennett had 430 points in 1999-2000.

Wendell was previously named MVC Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 11, Dec. 2, Dec. 31, Feb. 3, Feb. 10, and Feb. 24. Jill Martin and Whitney Pegram shared the previous Drake record for most newcomer awards with three each during the 2003-04 campaign.

Drake hosts Indiana State this Thursday, March 6 with tipoff slated for 7:05 p.m.
