David Lane was hired as a Drake women's basketball assistant coach on May 1, 2012 by Drake Head Coach Jennie Baranczyk.

“David accomplished tremendous success at Chipola and competed every year for national championships,” said Baranczyk. “He has coached a wide range of men and women student-athletes in his career at both the junior college and high school levels. He is bringing an outstanding basketball IQ and intensity to motivate student-athletes to achieve success at a high-level.”

Lane has been the head coach at Chipola College (Fla.) for the past nine seasons. An Iowa City native, Lane led the Indians to four Florida Community College state titles and four NJCAA national tournament appearances. The Indians advanced to the NJCAA Final Four under Lane two times, the NJCAA elite eight three times and took third place in 2009. Prior to Chipola, Lane was an assistant coach in 2003 for the men's basketball team at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. Lane served as an assistant coach at Iowa City West High from 1996-2002 both with the boy's and girl's teams.

“Being able to coach in Division I basketball is something I’ve always wanted to do,” Lane said. “I have known Jennie for a long time and this is good for my family since it’s an hour-and-a-half from my family and my wife’s family. I knew that this was opportunity was going to be the one.”

Lane played college baseball at Kirkwood and Luther College. He graduated from Coe College with a bachelor's degree in History. He and his wife, Heather, have two children, daughter Mackenzie and son, Maddox.
