McCann Earns A Pair Of MVC Honors
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Drake University sophomore distance runner Rob McCann (Mississauga, Ontario) was named both the Missouri Valley Conference Runner of the Week and the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
McCann earned the athletic honor by virtue of running the second-fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase in school history at 8:51.54. His time, the fastest by a Bulldog in 34 years, was set in a second-place performance in the Olympic development elite heat at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays last Friday.
His time leads the MVC in the event and ranks in the top 20 nationally.
That performance, combined with a 3.94 GPA in his accounting and math coursework also earned him MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors.
To qualify for that honor, a student-athlete must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
McCann has qualified to run in two events at this week’s Drake Relays on his home track. He is entered in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 1,500 meters. The steeplechase is scheduled for Saturday at 10:53 a.m. with the 1,500 meters at 3:08 p.m.
