Track And Field Wins Two Events On First Day Of Jim Duncan Invitational
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University track and field teams won two events and recorded 13 top-10 finishes in seven events on the first day of the 38th annual Jim Duncan Invitational at Drake Stadium Friday.
The Bulldogs’ distance runners had a solid evening led by Ian Harkreader (Arvada, Colo.) winning the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:31.48 while Conor Wells (Des Moines, Iowa) was second overall and the top collegian in the 5,000 meters in 14:48.61.
“It was the first time this season for these guys to run the 5K or 10K, so it was important to just get in a good, solid effort,” said Drake University assistant coach Dan Hostager. “It’s always nice when our kids can run PRs because it really sets up the season well.”
Wells was trailed closely by freshman Reed Fischer (Minnetonka, Minn.) who was on pace for an excellent race before being tripped up from behind and finishing 10th in 14:57.61.
The women’s 5,000-meter race saw four Bulldogs finish in the top 10 with two setting personal bests including Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) finishing four in 17:29.80. Her time shaved more than 30 seconds off her previous best and Erin Poss (Antioch, Ill.) turned in a similar performance with her time of 17:44.48 to finish fifth with her personal best.
“Emma had a really nice PR in the 5K, which should help with her confidence going forward, and they really all competed well today,” Hostager said of the women in the 5,000 meters.
Drake’s men also had success in the afternoon field events as Johnathan Osifuye (Woodbury, Minn.) won the triple jump with a wind-aided jump of 48-7.5. Ethan Turner (Woodbury, Minn.) and Sean Buczek (Crystal Lake, Ill.) were second and fourth, respectively. Ryan Cook (Colorado Springs, Colo.) tied for second in the high jump by clearing 6-8 and Phillip Beeler (Lenexa, Kan.) had the top finish in the throws with a mark of 187-3 in the javelin.
Action Friday was an appetizer for what is scheduled to be a full day of track and field at Drake Stadium with action resuming at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning with high school field events. Track events get underway at 9 a.m. with the high school shuttle-hurdle relays.
