Track And Field Travels to Iowa Friday
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University track and field teams make the short trip to Iowa City Friday for the Iowa Invitational at the UI Recreation Building. The one-day evening meet will be the Bulldogs’ final tune-up prior to the MVC Championship.
The Iowa Invitational begins on Friday evening at 4 p.m. with the start of field events and preliminary heats on the track start at 5:15 p.m. with a rolling schedule the remainder of the evening. The low-key meet will see the Bulldogs put in their final training leading up to the MVC Championships against the likes of Western Illinois, Bradley, smaller Division III programs and the homestanding Hawkeyes.
“It’s a tune-up for those going to conference and the goal is to limit everyone to one event, be sharp at it and get ready for conference meet,” said Drake head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown. “But for some of our team, they’ll be looking to do something special so that they can make the roster for the conference meet and others have been sick or injured and haven’t competed much. It’s much lower key for us this week.”
That more low key atmosphere comes on the heels of back-to-back weeks against strong nationally ranked competition and loaded fields at the Husker Invitational and Iowa State Classic. However, those experiences allowed the coaching staff to see the potential that lies within the team heading into the championship portion of the schedule.
“We’ve had some good performances in the last two weeks that got me excited,” Kaiser-Brown said. “I think everyone is understanding the rhythm to their competition and looking a lot better. But we’ve got to stay healthy this week and be smart with it.”
Following the Iowa Invitational, the team will squeeze in one more week of training before lining up at the MVC Championship in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Feb. 28 – March 2.
