McCann Named MVC Track And Field Elite 18 Winner
SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Drake University sophomore Rob McCann (Mississauga, Ontario) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference outdoor track and field Elite 18 award recipient, the conference announced following the MVC Championship.
The MVC Elite 18 award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing at the finals site at each of the MVC’s 18 team championships. Earlier this year, Steven Jordan (McFarland, Wis.) was named the Elite 18 winner at the MVC Indoor Championship to give the Bulldogs a season sweep of the prestigious award.
McCann earned the honor by virtue of his studious work in the classroom and outstanding performance at the 2014 MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championship last weekend.
McCann maintains a 3.94 grade point average in his mathematics coursework and was recently crowned the MVC 3,000-meter steeplechase champion. He won the event by more than six seconds with a personal best time of 8:50.79 to set a facility record on Southern Illinois’ track. His time was also the second fastest steeplechase in Drake history.
A day later, McCann returned to the track where he finished fifth in the 1,500 meters in 3:56.31.
Currently, his steeplechase time is the 26th fastest in the nation and the 12th fastest in the NCAA West Region for the preliminary round of the NCAA Championships.
The West Region preliminary round fields will be announced on May 22 and competition begins on May 29.
