AUSTIN, Texas - Junior Marissa Smith (Ajax, Ontario) broke her own school record in the 100-meter hurdles at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, but that was not enough to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on June 6-9.
Smith's time of 13.39 broke her own personal best and school record that she set a day earlier (13.43), but was fifth in her heat and finished 14th out of the 27 participants in the quarterfinals. Only the top three individuals from each of the three heats and the next best three times advanced to the NCAA Championships at Drake Stadium.
Smith's performance marked the final one for the Bulldogs this outdoor season. Six of the eight athletes that competed at the NCAA West Prelims will return for Drake next year, including Smith.
