Salibasic Selected As MVC Scholar-Athlete Of The Week
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Drake men’s tennis junior Alen Salibasic (Tuzla, Bosnia & Herzegovina) and Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir of Indiana State have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced on Wednesday (Feb. 26). Salibasic and Abdul-Qaadir were honored for their performances during the period of February 17-23.
Now in its 15th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
Salibasic, who owns a 4.0 grade-point average in international business and finance, registered a pair of wins for the Bulldogs in their 4-3 setback at No. 49 Minnesota on Saturday (Feb. 22).
In doubles, he paired with junior Ben Mullis (Leicestershire, England) to record an 8-4 decision at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Salibasic collected a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over 80th-rated Leandro Toledo at the No. 1 singles position. The victory was his second against a ranked opponent this season.
On the year, Salibasic owns a 19-11 combined singles/doubles ledger.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
