ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Drake men's tennis senior Robin Goodman (Cambridge, England) and Sarah McMahon of Bradley have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced on Wednesday (Oct. 23). Goodman and McMahon were honored for their performances during the period of October 14-20.

Now in its 15th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.

Goodman, who maintains a 3.48 cumulative grade-point average in business management, paired with junior Ravi Patel (London, England) at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional on Monday (Oct. 21) to earn a doubles championship on the strength of an 8-5 triumph past Minnesota’s Mathieu Froment and Jack Hamburg.

The duo is believed to be the first Drake doubles squad to capture a regional title in program history. By virtue of their triumph, Goodman and Patel have earned a berth into the United States Tennis Association/ITA National Indoor Championship at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. (Nov. 7-10).

Goodman and Patel fell behind Froment and Hamburg early as the Golden Gopher duo held a 5-4 lead. Goodman and Patel staved off several key game points en route to breaking Minnesota’s serve before rattling off four unanswered tallies to clinch the match.

In singles, Goodman, who is rated No. 88 nationally by the ITA, advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to sophomore teammate Ben Lott (Newcastle, England).

On the season, Goodman owns a 9-4 combined singles/doubles record, including a 6-1 mark in doubles.

To qualify for MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.

Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
