Austin Steps Down As Bulldogs' Head Men's Tennis Coach

DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake announced on Wednesday (Aug. 1) that a national search in under way to hire a new men's tennis coach to succeed Evan Austin, who has accepted a job as head coach at Fresno State.

"Evan Austin worked extremely hard over the last two seasons to make the Drake men's tennis program among the elite in the nation," Drake Associate Athletic Director Brian Brown commented.  "Under Evan's leadership, the Bulldogs have returned to national prominence while continuing the development of a program built over the past decade on NCAA Tournament appearances and Missouri Valley Conference championships."

Drake posted a 45-6 mark in two years under Austin, including equaling a school record for victories (24) this past season.  The two-time MVC Coach of the Year, led the Bulldogs to NCAA Tournament in both of his two campaigns at the helm of the Drake program.

In two seasons under Austin's leadership, the Bulldogs returned to the national rankings for the first time since the 2009 campaign and ascended to their highest ranking checking in at No. 39 on March 6, 2012.  Additionally, Mauricio Ballivian and Anis Ghorbel (Sfax, Tunisia) were named as the MVC Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

"I'm extremely proud of what we've accomplished the past two years here and I'm going to miss this incredibly hard working group of young men," said Austin.  "I know the future for this team is extremely bright and I appreciate the hard work and dedication of everyone at Drake to help us succeed over the past two seasons."

The Bulldogs return eight letterwinners and five starters from the 2012 MVC championship and NCAA Tournament team.

"We are excited about the state of the program as the nucleus of the team is returning and are poised to contend for another trip to the NCAA Tournament," stated Brown.  "We thank him for all that he has done in making Drake a better program and wish him the very best at Fresno State."
